The Pixel 4 doesn't come with free, unlimited full-res Google Photos storage

Posted October 15, 2019 | Mobile | News

The original Google Pixel shipped with just 32GB of storage while the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 stuck to 64GB. Google justified these decisions at the time by offering free, unlimited full-resolution Google Photos storage but now the company has had a change of heart.

Despite sticking to just 64GB of internal storage like previous-generation models, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL no longer include free, unlimited full-resolution Google Photos storage. Instead, users will have to settle for the high-resolution tier that absolutely anybody can access for free regardless of their smartphone. This means that if you try to upload a 4K video to Google Photos it’ll count towards your Google Drive storage.

To compensate a little, Google is offering a three-month trial of Google one with 100GB of storage on the Pixel 4 although this doesn’t really feel like a fair trade-off. After all, once the offer has expired users of the flagships will be forced to pay $2 a month to continue with the plan and may eventually have to pay even more if the 100GB of storage is used up.

Google Pixel 3 buyers, on the other hand, will be able to continue uploading full-resolution photos and video to Google Photos until January 31, 2020, by which time they’ll most likely have exceeded the 100GB limit of the basic Google One subscription.
