Siri May Soon Be Able to Support Multiple Users

Posted August 14, 2018 | Apple | Homepod | Siri | Voice Match | Windows

Apple could be preparing a huge upgrade for Siri if the company’s latest patent becomes a reality. Cupertino recently published a new patent that presents what seems to be multi-user support for the personal assistant, reports AppleInsider.

The patent, titled “user profiling for voice input processing” illustrates how the featured would work on an abstracted-level. The system will include some sort of voice recognition tech that’s able to distinguish between different users’ voices, and then offer a personalized experience to the specific user. So for example, you can add all your family members to your living room’s HomePod. From there, you can listen to your own playlists on Apple Music, and your sister could ask to listen to her own playlists on Apple Music after you leave. The system will also be able to offer personalized features like sending messages on iMessage from your phone and read your messages on the system.

Google Home already has a similar feature called Voice Match where the Assistant is capable of distinguishing between different users on the fly and presenting a personalized experience. Multi-user support for Siri would work exactly like that. The feature does present companies and users with a privacy dilemma, so if you are concerned about someone “faking” your voice and getting access to your personal data, you may wanna disable it. Either way, multi-user support for Apple is only just a patent for now, so it could take years before it becomes a reality.
