Samsung CEO says five new devices are coming on August 5

Posted July 21, 2020 | Mobile | News

Samsung is the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world and as such, it can affect the direction in which the industry is heading to a significant degree. And where Samsung itself will go depends on the man in charge.

TM Roh, who was appointed CEO of Samsung’s mobile division in January this year, shared his thoughts about the “Next Normal” in a post on Samsung’s website.

Roh highlights how much more important technology has become since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and how Samsung is planning to take on the new challenges that emerged with it.

The first stage begins with Samsung’s next wave of devices that are coming on August 5:

Which will be Samsung’s five new devices?

The Galaxy Note 20 is the main reason for the event, so that’s one device off the list. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is also almost certain to be unveiled on August 5, so that’s two.

From the last part of the quote, “… in your ears, and on your wrist.”, we can easily deduct that he’s referring to the Galaxy Buds Live and the Galaxy Watch 3, two devices we’ve seen plenty of leaks for.

So, what’s the last device? There are two contenders: the Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the Galaxy Tab S7. Both seem equally likely to be part of the Unpacked event but a 5G version of an existing phone isn’t very exciting. That’s why we’re hoping that Samsung’s next flagship tablet, the Tab S7, is the product that will complete the lineup.

Needless to say, this year’s summer Unpacked event will be one of the biggest in recent Samsung history. And we’re only 15 days away!

Samsung’s three strategic pillars

TM Roh also talks about the three priorities he’s focusing the company on in order to answer the needs of consumers living in the “Next Normal”. These are:

Meaningful Innovations

The CEO says that over the last 6 months, Samsung has ramped up its research and development efforts and poured additional resources in that area so it can “super-charge” its product line.

The products mentioned above are coming out too soon to reflect that uptick in R&D, which means that next year’s Galaxy lineup of smartphones, tablets and smartwatches could be a bigger leap forward than what we’ve seen so far.

Open Collaboration

For this section, Roh highlights Samsung’s collaboration with Microsoft, Google, Netflix and Spotify. Indeed, Microsoft and Samsung have been working closely together to bring a seamless workflow between Galaxy phones and computers running Windows, trying to match the close integration Apple has with the products of its own ecosystem.

Operational Agility

And lastly, Samsung’s CEO talks about the importance of the company being able to quickly respond to the needs of its customers and partners. Samsung’s supply chain was disrupted multiple times by the pandemic, causing product delays and shortages.

Roh is looking to ensure that not only can Samsung develop new and innovative products without hindrance, but continue to deliver those of its existing lineup without missing a beat.

Overall, the CEO’s post makes us anticipate upcoming Samsung products even more. Hopefully, the company will manage to deliver on its promises and will raise the bar, forcing its competitors to deliver better products as well.
