While traveling this past week, I noticed that Momentum Plus, the paid New Tab extension that I use, added a new Soundscapes feature. I ignored it at the time because I was busy, but while I was configuring Firefox on the next review laptop, I decided to give it a go. And while I’m not normally a fan of all the digital wellbeing and “focus” functionality that’s suddenly appearing everywhere, this one is surprisingly pleasant.

“We are excited to announce our latest addition to Momentum Plus, Soundscapes,” the Momentum team writes in a recent blog post. “Enjoy our collection of scenic background sounds including campfire, beach, forest, and café. You can also choose a random scene or build your own custom one.”

That pretty much sums it up. Via a new Soundscapes icon in the upper-right of the Momentum display, you can choose between several soundscapes, each configurable, choose a random soundscape, or create your own. I really like the sound of rain, and even the default Rainfall soundscape is just about perfect, creating a soothing background sound that plays continuously as you work on the PC. Just keep a New Tab page open.

Anyway, nothing earth-shattering. But I wasn’t expecting to need or care about any new Momentum Plus functionality, as I like it enough the way it is to pay for it. (Momentum Plus costs $4.95 when billed monthly or $40 annually.) But maybe this could put it over the top for someone who was previously on the fence, so to speak.
