Microsoft Releases Windows 10 May 2020 Update to Release Preview

Posted April 16, 2020 | Microsoft | Windows | Windows 10 | Windows 10 May 2020 Update

Today is a big day for Windows 10’s next major update, the May 2020 Update (aka 20H1). Microsoft is announcing that it’s preparing the Windows 10 May 2020 Update for a public release after months of testing with Insiders.

The first step of that process is making Windows 10 May 2020 Update available in the Release Preview ring of the Windows Insider program. And that’s happening today.

The company is releasing build 19041.207 to Insiders in the Release Preview ring, and it believes build 19041.207 to be the final build for the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. So if everything goes according to plan, Microsoft will release build 19041.207 as the Windows 10 May 2020 Update to the public sometime soon.

The new update is only coming to a subset of Insiders in the Release Preview ring for now, but if you want to manually update, you can go and manually check for updates from Windows Update in the Settings app.

KB4550936, the update that Microsoft is releasing to Insiders in Release Preview today, includes a number of fixes, too:

  • This build is cumulative and includes all the fixes released to Windows Insiders in Build 19041.21 through Build 19041.173.
  • We fixed an issue that causes the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service (rpcss.exe) to close unexpectedly and the device stops working. Then you must restart the device.
  • We fixed an issue that causes the Device Enrollment Status Page (ESP) on managed devices to stop responding if a policy that requires a restart is installed on the device.
  • We fixed an issue that might prevent the rear camera flash from functioning as expected on devices that have a rear camera.
  • It also includes the latest security updates to the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows Kernel, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Media, Windows Shell, Windows Management, Windows Cloud Infrastructure, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Authentication, Windows Virtualization, Windows Core Networking, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Update Stack, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

Microsoft did warn users of Windows Mixed Reality to not update to the Windows 10 May 2020 Update as there is an issue in the latest update. “Windows Mixed Reality may not work correctly for many users on the May 2020 Update. If you regularly use Windows Mixed Reality, we recommend holding off taking the May 2020 Update via Release Preview for now,” said Microsoft. The company hopes to release a fix for the issue in early May.

Microsoft is yet to set a release date for the Windows 10 May 2020 Update for the public, by the way. But considering the update is making its debut on the Release Preview ring today, the public rollout probably is not far off.
