Back to school deal lets students enjoy free YouTube Premium access for three whole months
Discounted student plans for various music streaming services are obviously nothing new, with Pandora being the latest company to join the party, but as the beginning of the school year draws near, Apple and Amazon recently took things to the next level.
Unsurprisingly, Google is now hitting back, albeit with a slightly inferior deal. Instead of offering an extended six-month trial or a permanent discount, the search giant is giving away access to its YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium platforms for three months. All you need is a new student membership and you’re good to go in “select territories”, including the US.
In case you’re wondering (and we know you are), YouTube Music Premium is technically Google’s latest answer to the likes of Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music Unlimited, while YouTube Premium is a little more than that. Basically, a subscription to the latter service includes Music Premium access, as well as ad-free YouTube streaming and offline playback.
It’s therefore pretty obvious which one of the two you should choose, especially when considering YouTube Premium typically costs $6.99 a month for students, while Music Premium will set you back $4.99 a month once the 90-day promotional period is up. Of course, you can always cancel your subscription before you actually start paying for your tunes and mobile YouTube video downloads, at which point you can try out Spotify, then Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, and the list goes on and on. That’s the beauty of such an insanely crowded and competitive market.
