Xbox One X Gets Off to a Strong Start

Posted August 24, 2017 | Windows | Xbox One | Xbox One X

There’s no information quite like anecdotal information, but if you piece together what we know about Xbox One X pre-orders so far, one fact emerges: This thing is already selling faster than Microsoft expected.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg.

“We’re gonna make as many Xbox One Xs as we can make,” he told DualShockers, noting that the demand so far has been “overwhelming.” “All the signs are that it’s gonna be the number one hit product of this Holiday, so we’re gonna keep up with demand the best that we can.”

So how well is Xbox One X selling? It’s already sold out, Greenberg told a German YouTube v-logger this week at gamescom.

“[Xbox One X] sold out at Amazon I think in twenty-five minutes,” he said (according to a transcript provided by WCCFTech. “We expected our total inventory to last about a week and it sold out in less than a day.”

Greenberg does seem to acknowledge that the notion of selling out of a product whose stock is artificially limited is somewhat absurd. But when you consider that Xbox One X was made for the fans, it’s still pretty impressive.

“We don’t share the amount of inventory, but the Project Scorpio Edition was for those core fans, the people that used to line up in front of the stores. We knew they would be digitally pre-ordering that and we wanted to make a special edition just for them. It’s nice to see the response.”

So, it’s sold out on Amazon. But what about the other retailers that are offering Xbox One X for pre-order?

As it turns out, it’s sold out everywhere: Not just Amazon.com, but Best Buy, GameStop, Microsoft Store, Target, and Walmart all list the console as being sold out.

Adding fuel to the fire, Neowin reports that the Xbox One X Project Scorpio—which, again, is just a limited edition version of the console—has already outsold the Sony PlayStation 4 through 2017 so far. “The Xbox One X currently ranks 66th on the Amazon Best Seller List for 2017, well ahead of the mid-generation refresh from Sony,” the site notes.

So there you go. The real proof, of course, will be when the normal version of the console starts selling, and over time, as we compare sales, as much as is possible, with those of Sony’s PS4 Pro. But this looks like an encouraging start.
