Windows 10 October 2018 Update Users Start Reporting Early Issues

On October 2, Microsoft publicly launched the Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The update is now available for manual download, with an official rollout expected to start on Tuesday. The rollout is expected to happen in stages, though those who already downloaded the update are running into some early issues.

Users throughout the interwebs started reporting issues with the update after installing the upgrade. Some are reporting that their files are being deleted after the update is installed — more specifically, the update is reportedly removing files in the Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders.

“I have just updated my Windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me,” a user reported on Microsoft Answers. Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the issue, and some users are reporting that reverting back to an older version of Windows 10 doesn’t recover the deleted files. Yikes.

Other users are reporting issues with Microsoft’s Edge browser. We have received multiple emails from users reporting Edge’s issues. The browser seems to be completely unusable after the update is installed, with multiple users reporting the same issue.

While most users are reporting an issue where Edge is unable to connect to sites, we have received multiple reports where Edge deleted bookmarked websites after the update was installed. Once again, Microsoft is yet to acknowledge both the issues here, but some users are reporting that enabling IPv6 could help fix the connectivity issues.

It’s not unusual for Windows 10 updates to have early issues initially. Microsoft has run into similar issues in the past, which is why the company rolls out major feature updates in phases. Still, the October 2018 Update is notably one of the more unstable Windows 10 updates in a long time, and I have a good feeling we will see more early issues as the update rolls out more users.
