Twitter for Mac Gets New Streaming Timeline Feature

Posted April 21, 2020 | Mac and macOS | Social | Twitter | Twitter for Mac | Windows

Twitter released new desktop apps for its platform over the last few years. The company first launched a new Windows 10 app using its new Progressive Web App back in 2018, and it also brought a new app for Mac users using Apple’s Project Catalyst last year.

What that means is that Twitter’s Mac app is essentially the iOS app, with improvements to make it work better on the desktop. Twitter is now adding a new feature to the Mac app that’s not available on the iOS app, and it’s a really useful one.

Twitter for Mac is getting a streaming timeline option — in other words, Twitter for Mac can now automatically load the latest tweets in real-time without you having to manually refresh. It’s a lot like the company’s TweetDeck app where the latest tweets get loaded without the user having to refresh their timeline.

The new feature, called “Pin to top”, can be accessed from the “sparkles” icon on the top right section of the timeline. It still seems to be rolling out as I don’t have it yet on my Mac.

Either way, this is a really nice addition to the Twitter for Mac app that I hope makes it to more of the company’s apps, specifically the web app (which would make it available for the Windows 10 app as its a PWA). But considering Twitter probably has different teams working on the web app and the Mac app, it could be a while before that happens.
