Teams/Skype Interoperability Could Be Coming This Month

Posted May 18, 2020 | Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Teams | Office 365 | Skype | Windows

The Microsoft 365 roadmap has been updated to reflect that Teams/Skype interoperability is coming this month, and not in preview, supposedly.

“Teams/Skype Consumer chat and calling interop” is currently “in development,” the roadmap now says. “General availability” is expected “worldwide” to “standard multi-tenant” Office 365 customers in May 2020.

I’m not 100 percent sure this is accurate, and if this functionality does suddenly appear, I bet it will be in preview, not generally available. But we’ll see.

News of the change comes via the German tech blog Dr. Windows. I discovered this through Neowin.

Microsoft had first revealed these plans back in March, when it noted that it had “been working for some time on a connection between Microsoft Teams, which is also known to be the successor to Skype for Business, and the consumer version of Skype.”

“Once the integration is available, Teams users can chat with Skype users and make VoIP phone calls,” the Microsoft statement continued. “All you need is the email address of the associated Microsoft account.”
