Spotify Now Algorithmically Personalizes Some of Its Human-Curated Playlists

Posted March 27, 2019 | Music + Videos | Spotify | Windows

Spotify is testing a major change to its playlist ecosystem. The company announced on Tuesday that the company has now started using algorithms to personalize some of its human-curated playlists. Spotify is known for its human-curated playlists like RapCaviar, but the company’s algorithm-powered playlists like Discover Weekly and Daily Mix have been equally popular.

And Spotify is now mixing both of its human talent and algorithmic power together with some of its playlists. Some of its human-curated playlists will now be personalized for each listener based on their taste and listening habits — that means if you listen to RapCaviar, for example, you will now see a playlist based on your taste.

Spotify isn’t saying exactly which of its human-curated playlists now make use of algorithms, however. But the company says it has seen increased engagement with the new system, with song saves going up by 66% and users individually searching up tracks for repeat listens up by 80%. That’s a massive improvement for sure.

Spotify artists who have their songs featured in these human-curated playlists will now have their own links for the playlists that put their featured tracks on the top of the personalized playlists. And if you are worried about these playlists losing the human touch, do keep in mind that these will continue to be curated by humans, but it will simply be personalized to match each individual user’s taste.
