Report: Microsoft May Stick to Intel CPUs For its Surface Laptop 5

Posted September 21, 2022 | Microsoft Surface | Mobile | Surface | Surface Laptop | Surface Laptop 5 | Windows

It has become a tradition for Microsoft to release new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models in October, and this year should be no exception. According to a previous report, this year’s Surface Pro 9 should offer a choice between Intel and Qualcomm CPUs for the first time. However, the Surface Laptop 5 may stick with Intel processors and drop the previous AMD option.

The information comes from the German blog WinFuture, which obtained information about the Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5 from retailers. According to the report, the Surface Laptop 5 will be available with the same 12th-Gen Intel Core CPUs coming to the Surface Pro 9, though as of this writing, there’s no indication that the new Laptop model will also be available with AMD Ryzen chips.

The Surface Laptop 3 from 2019 was the first Surface device to offer the choice between Intel and AMD Ryzen chips on the 15” model. Last year, the Surface Laptop 4 brought the same choice between Intel and AMD chips on the 13.5” model as well. However, WinFuture reports that it’s still too early to be certain about Microsoft skipping AMD chips entirely for this new Surface Laptop generation.

According to the report, the Surface Pro 9 should start at €1,300 in Europe while the Surface Laptop 5 should start at €1,200 for the 13.5-inch model. In addition to the new ARM option for the Surface Pro 9, the new tablet is also expected to be available in two new finishes named “Forest” (green) and “Sapphire” (blue).

It will also be interesting to see if Microsoft plans to refresh other Surface products this fall, including the “Studio” line for digital creators. The Surface Laptop Studio could probably be updated with faster 12th gen Intel CPUs, while the Surface Studio family of all-in-one PCs hasn’t received an update since October 2018. Microsoft actually made an exception to its Windows 11 minimum system requirements last year to allow the Surface Studio 2 with its 7th gen Kaby Lake CPU to receive the update.
