Outlook to Introduce Gmail Smart Compose-like Feature

Posted May 8, 2020 | Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Consumer Services | Outlook | Outlook on the web | Outlook.com | Send Later | Smart Compose | Windows

Google has been doing a couple of interesting things with Gmail in recent years. The company introduced features like Smart Reply, but took it a step further with Smart Compose, a feature that offers auto-completion while you are writing an email. The company even brought Smart Compose to Google Docs.

And now, it looks like Microsoft is going to be introducing a similar feature for Outlook. The feature, called “text predictions” is currently in development for Outlook on the Web, according to the Microsoft 365 roadmap.

There are not a lot of details on the new feature, but the idea is pretty simple: as you write an email, Outlook will intelligently suggest the next phrase, and you can hit the Tab key to accept the suggestion. “Using smart technology, Outlook will predict text while you type. Just use the Tab key to accept the text prediction,” Microsoft notes on the Microsoft 365 roadmap.

The feature is expected to be released sometime later this month.

Another major feature coming to Outlook on the web is the ability to schedule emails. Outlook is introducing the ability to schedule an email, so you can write an email and schedule it to be sent at a later date and time. The new Send Later feature on Outlook on the web is expected to ship sometime in the second quarter of 2020.
