Nintendo Switch Sales More Than Doubled Year-over-Year

Posted April 21, 2020 | Games | Hardware | Nintendo Switch | Switch | Windows

It’s no secret the Nintendo Switch has been a big hit for the company. Since its launch in 2017, the Switch has been rapidly gaining popularity. And with the launch of the latest instalment of its Animal Crossing series, Nintendo’s Switch sales saw a massive increase in sales last month.

NPD today reported some interesting new sales data for console hardware sales. The highlight of the latest data is Nintendo’s Switch selling more than double the amount it did a year ago.

In other words, Nintendo sold double the units of the Switch in March 2020 than it did in March 2019. Microsoft’s Xbox One and Sony’s PlayStation 4 hardware sales also grew by more than 25% year-over-year.

The sales of the Switch were more than likely fueled by the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The company launched a special edition of the console for the game, but that quickly went out of stock. Other variants of the Switch, like the Switch Lite and the refreshed Switch, also went out of stock very quickly. I had to wait for more than a week to grab a Switch here in the UK, for example, and the console continues to be out of stock at most retailers.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was also the top-selling game in March, beating Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It’s also the second best-selling game of the year so far. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has clearly been a big hit for Nintendo, and with the game only launching recently, the hype likely won’t die down anytime soon.
