This spring, Apple discontinued production of the iMac Pro, the company’s most highly specced and pro-targeted version of the iMac all-in-one.

However, if we are to believe a new report from the reliable analyst Ross Young, a new model of iMac Pro will be launched some time in the spring of 2022. It’s unclear at this point if the branding will be exactly the same – Young refers to it as an iMac Pro, but it may simply be called iMac, while offering a clear pro focus – but the position in the line-up will match that of the 2018 machine.

Young writes: “Apple’s Launch of the 27in iMac Pro with Mini-LEDs, 120Hz Variable Refresh and Oxide Backplanes: Expected in the spring as Apple brings its ProMotion technology to the iMac.”

The design is said to be similar to that used in the 24in iMac model: in other words we can expect a wide range of colours. (Although this would go against the design strategy we had previously expected Apple to follow on the Mac as well as on the iPhone, where consumer products get bright colours and pro models are more sombre.)

Otherwise, we can expect a 27in ProMotion display with mini-LED backlighting, a choice of Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, USB-C, HDMI and a card reader. The standard model will have 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Presumably, the new model of iMac Pro will replace the current 27in iMac, so there will be only two models to choose from in the future as well. There have been rumours of a 32in iMac in the past, but this still seems to be a few years off.
