Netflix Starts Restricting Password Sharing in Four Markets

Posted February 9, 2023 | Music + Videos | Netflix | Windows

Netflix has begun its password-sharing crackdown in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain today. Last year, the company has been experimenting with different approaches to prevent password sharing in Latin America, and going forward Netflix subscribers will only be allowed to share their password for free with people living in the same household.

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account with features like profiles and multiple streams. While these have been hugely popular, they’ve also created confusion about when and how you can share Netflix. Today, over 100 million households are sharing accounts — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films,” explained Chengyi Long, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix.

Starting today, Netflix will help subscribers in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain to set a primary location for their account, which will allow other people living in the same household to use their Netflix account for free. “Members can still easily watch Netflix on their personal devices or log into a new TV, like at a hotel or holiday rental,” Long said.

The new Manage Access and Devices page will also provide control over who can access a Netflix account. To share a subscription with an extra user outside of their household, members on the Netflix Standard or Premium plans can buy up to two extra member accounts. Each extra member will cost $7.99/ month in Canada, $7.99 in New Zealand, $3.99 in Portugal, and $5.99 in Spain.

If you’d rather not pay extra for sharing your subscription with an extra member, you’ll still have the option to transfer their existing profile to a new Netflix account. By doing so, these users can keep their personalized recommendations, viewing history, and more.

Netflix plans to roll out these new password-sharing restrictions to other countries in the coming months. “As always, we’ll refine these new features based on member feedback so that we continue to improve Netflix in the years ahead,” said Netflix’s Director of Product Innovation.
