Microsoft’s Office Mobile App is Losing Some File Sharing Features

Posted November 15, 2022 | Android | Cloud | iOS | Microsoft 365 | Office | Office 365 | Office mobile | Windows

Microsoft’s Office Mobile app is about to lose some file-sharing features ahead of the transition to the new Microsoft 365 branding. On the Microsoft 365 blog yesterday, the company explained that the app’s Share Nearby and Transfer Files features will be retired at the end of the year.

The Share Nearby feature, which lets users send and receive files between two Android phones over a wireless connection will be retired on December 31, 2022. “We have found that the Share Nearby feature to meet some but not all needs,” the company explained.

The File Transfer option in the Office Mobile app, which lets users send and receive files from a PC using QR code is also being retired on December 31, 2022. “Rest assured that files that have been sent and received using the Transfer Files feature will remain in the Office app and will be unaffected by this change,” the company said.

Microsoft will be pushing users to use OneDrive to transfer and access files instead of this Transfer Files feature. OneDrive sharing is already built-in in the Office mobile app, and users get more granular controls when selecting how they want to share files.

At its Ignite conference last month, Microsoft announced that its all-in-one Office apps on mobile and Windows will soon be rebranded to Microsoft 365. The same change is about to impact office.com this month, and the branding change will apply to the Windows and mobile apps in January 2023.
