Microsoft Updates Its Designed for Xbox Program

Posted September 2, 2020 | Designed for Xbox | Windows | Xbox | Xbox One | Xbox Series X

With the launch of the Xbox Series X imminent, Microsoft today announced that it is updating its Designed for Xbox program with a new logo and a new focus on “continuous compatibility” across console generations.

“Since the launch of the original Xbox, the Designed for Xbox program has focused on engaging with partners to build the best possible accessories for Xbox across a range of categories,” Microsoft’s Alex Nunn writes. “With the launch of Xbox Series X, we’re committed to continuous compatibility, as we know that how and where an accessory works is incredibly important to the overall experience.”

First, of course, is the new logo. Microsoft says this new logo is “a different look, while maintaining the same confidence and dependability you have come to expect with a Designed for Xbox accessory.” More importantly, it communicates “continuous compatibility” between console generations. If you see this logo on a box, the product it contains should work across all Xbox One and Xbox Series X models, but additional language elsewhere on the box will clarify that.

Next, any officially licensed Xbox One accessory that connects to your console wired or wirelessly via USB will work on Xbox Series X, Microsoft says. And any headsets that connect via an Xbox wireless controller’s 3.5 mm headphone port will also be supported on the new console. But some gaming headsets that utilize an optical cable may require a firmware update to support game and chat audio over USB on Xbox Series X; soundbars and headsets that do not receive updates may be connected directly to your televisions optical port.

Microsoft also notes that some new Designed for Xbox controller charging solutions that ship this holiday season will support the battery doors of both the new and existing Xbox wireless controllers.

Finally, Microsoft revealed a new set of third-party partners that will ship Design for Xbox branded products this year, including Audeze, Bang & Olufsen, Cable Matters, Geek Made Designs, Honeycomb Aeronautical, Nacon, and OtterBox.
