Microsoft to Stop Supporting Edge on Windows 7 in mid-2021

Posted April 16, 2020 | Microsoft Edge | Windows | Windows 7

Microsoft revealed this week that it will stop supporting its new Edge browser in Windows 7 on July 15, 2021, in keeping with the Google Chrome support schedule for Windows 7.

“We will continue to support Microsoft Edge on Windows 7 … until July 15, 2021,” a Microsoft support note explains. “[This operating system is] out of support and Microsoft recommends you move to a supported operating system such as Windows 10.”

This announcement applies only to individuals still using Windows 7: Businesses that purchased the Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 from Windows 7 will continue to receive support for the new Edge for the duration of that subscription.

“In order for IE mode to be supported on these operating systems the devices will need to have the Extended Security Updates for Windows 7,” the support note continues in a curiously poorly-written way. “Without the Windows 7 Extended Security updates[,] Internet Explorer functionality will be vulnerable to security risks. Additionally, IE mode functionality may cease to work without the continued servicing through the extended security updates.”
