With its MWC plans thwarted by the Coronavirus outbreak, Microsoft will now host a Mixed Reality Dev Days event just before Build 2020 in May.

“It’s official!  Save the date for Mixed Reality Dev Days, May 16 & 17 in Redmond,” Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Developer Relations Team tweeted yesterday. “We are also doing MR Dev Days Tour this year in Japan and Germany, but dates are still TBD as we search for a venue.  Look forward to seeing many of you there this year!”

As you may know, Microsoft already announced that it was hosting Build 2020 developer conference May 19-21 in Seattle, so this new event is clearly scheduled to allow interested developers to show up the weekend before Build and learn more about its MR and HoloLens efforts.

Granted, this isn’t an exact replacement for Microsoft’s MWC plans: That show is about mobile devices, not developers, and Microsoft wasn’t planning on providing any developer info at MWC. But maybe we’ll learn whatever it is that Microsoft intended to announce at MWC coincident to the Mixed Reality Dev Days event.

Or maybe this is just part of a broader effort to provide those interested in client-side development with smaller events outside of Build, which is increasingly focused on cloud development.
