Microsoft Brings Search Highlights to Windows 10 Insiders

Posted March 14, 2022 | Windows | Windows 10 | Windows Insider | Windows Search

Microsoft has started testing a new update for Search with Windows 10 Insiders in the Release Preview Channel. The company detailed the new “Search Highlights” feature last week, and its purpose is to bring glanceable information about trending searches, Microsoft Rewards offers, and “interesting moments in time.”

“The taskbar search box and search home will periodically update with content, including fun illustrations, which help you discover more, be connected, and stay productive. Search highlights will present notable and interesting moments of what’s special about each day—like holidays, anniversaries, and other educational moments in time both globally and in your region,” the Windows Insider team explained today.

If Windows Search will now push more dynamic content to users, the left side of search home will still display recently launched apps and different tabs for accessing your apps, documents, and more. We’re logged in with a work or school account, Search Highlights will also display organization content including suggested contacts and important documents.

Microsoft is aware that this new Search Highlights experience may not be for everyone, and users will be able to turn it off by doing a right-click on the taskbar > Search > select/clear “Show search highlights”. For IT Admins, additional controls will be available in the Microsoft 365 admin center to turn off the feature on all managed PCs.

“We are taking a phased and measured approach and broad availability will occur in the coming months,” the Windows Insider team said today. Search Highlights is also expected to start rolling out to Windows 11 testers in the Dev Channel later this week.
