Introducing Social Distance Drawing

Posted May 15, 2020 | Dev | Projects | Windows

A lot of you may know that apart from writing for Thurrott.com, I also make some cool things, most notably my app Tweeten. I have not been able to work on a lot of side projects because of work and studies, but with the ongoing lockdown, I have a lot of free time nowadays.

With that free time, I decided to learn new things, and I made this fun little app called Social Distance Drawing. It’s a completely free app where you can draw, chat, and talk to your friends.

The idea is pretty simple: there are 5 rounds each game, with each round taking 60 seconds. When you draw near a friend and break social distancing rules, the entire canvas will get cleared. At the end of each round, players have 10 seconds to vote for the best drawing. You can only vote when there are 3 players or more. If you have less in a room, you can just keep drawing without voting. You can also converse with each other via the chatbox and the built-in calling functionality.

You can check it out at distancedrawing.app. You can start your own room, or join others playing the game too.

For those curious, the app is actually pretty simple — I am using vanilla JavaScript for the front-end, and the backend is built on Express.js, while all the real-time communication happens via WebSockets and WebRTC.
