Google Quietly Launches Third-Gen Chromecast

Posted October 9, 2018 | Chromecast | Chromecast 2018 | Google | Windows

Google has quietly announced a new Chromecast today. The company announced new Pixel phones, a new Pixel-branded Chromebook tablet, as well as the Google Home Hub. One thing the company didn’t mention, though, was the new Chromecast.

This is the third-generation of the Chromecast, now coming with a significantly refined design. Google has gotten rid of the Chrome logo, replacing it with its own logo and introducing a gorgeous matte finish. Chromecast is also now available in a white finish (“Chalk”) for the first time, which actually looks kind of pretty with the black HDMI cable. The company says the new Chromecast comes with 15% improvement in hardware speed.

The device now supports up to 1080p streaming at 60fps as a result, as well as WiFi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/5GHz). It’s still powered by a micro USB connection, so there is no Type-C just yet. Google says the device will get multi-room support later this year.

Available today for $35.
