Google is Moving Users to New Drive Sync Client

Posted July 12, 2021 | Cloud | Google | Google Drive | Windows

Google’s consumer and commercial customers will soon transition to a new Google Drive sync client for Windows and Mac.

“Each year, people are creating more content and using more devices to access that content,” Google’s Scott Limbird writes. “So it’s more critical than ever to be able to keep files, folders, and photos safe, synced between devices, backed up and organized. To address this, in the coming weeks we’ll be rolling out a number of new features for Drive for desktop [on] Windows [and] macOS, our unified sync client that lets you easily sync your content across all your devices and the cloud.”

Google used to maintain two desktop sync clients, Backup and Sync for consumers and Drive File Stream for commercial customers. Now, like OneDrive, there’s only a single, unified sync client that works across various Google services including Drive and Photos, and it lets you mirror Drive files on your desktop and sync the contents of attached USB drives to Drive.

Backup and Sync users will be prompted to upgrade to the new Drive client in the coming weeks, and Google plans to complete this transition in September.  You can learn more from the Google Help Center.
