Google Calendar for Web Gets Basic Offline Support

Posted January 21, 2021 | Google Chrome | Windows

Though it still doesn’t identify itself as a Progressive Web App (PWA), Google Calendar for web now supports a basic offline mode. The catch? It’s only available to commercial customers on Google Workspace, at least for now.

“You can now enable offline support for Google Calendar on Google Chrome from your computer,” a new post to the Google Workspace Updates blog explains. “When enabled, you can view your calendar and events from four weeks prior or any time in the future by week, day, or month. This is particularly useful when you’re offline or have unreliable internet access.”

Offline support will be enabled in organizations by default. But admins that wish to disable or manage this feature can do so from the Google Admin web interface. You’ll find the setting in Workspace > Calendar > Settings for Calendar > Advanced Settings > Calendar web offline.

For end-users, this feature is actually disabled by default when enabled at an organizational level. To enable it, open Chrome and navigate to Settings > General > Offline.

Note that offline support is still pretty basic. You can’t, for example, create or edit events, email guests, or access tasks and reminders when offline.
