Dell Updates XPS 13, Brands MR Headset as Visor

Posted August 28, 2017 | Dell XPS 13 | Hardware | MR | Windows | Windows 10 | Windows Mixed Reality

Today at the IFA conference in Berlin, Dell announced updates to its XPS 13, Inspiron 7000, and Inspiron 5000 PCs. And it announced final branding for its Mixed Reality Headset, which it will call the Visor.

Here’s what the PC maker announced.

XPS 13

Dell has announced a minor revision to its best-selling XPS 13 laptop, adding the recently-announced (and quad core) 8th generation Intel Core series of processors to the device. This results in a performance boost of up to 44 percent, Dell says.

The Core i7 version of the new XPS 13 will be available in the U.S. on September 12 and starts at $1399.99. Other configurations will be available starting in October, Dell says.

Inspiron 7000

The new Inspiron 7000 is available in laptop and 2-in-1 form factors, and in 13- and 15-inch display sizes. Both offer a Full HD IPS screen with 10 touch points, but you can optionally outfit the 15-inch versions with a 4K UHD IPS touch display that covers 100 percent of the AdobeRGB color space and adds NVIDIA GeForce 940 MX graphics. The devices feature new 8th generation Intel Core series processors, up to 16 GB of RAM, and USB-C for power and expansion.

Pricing starts at $799.99 for the laptop. For the 2-in-1, you’re looking at $879.99 for the 13-inch versions and $849.99 for the 15-inch. Both will be available starting October 3 (with some models in mid-October).

Inspiron 5000

Dell has also announced new 13- and 15-inch Inspiron 5000 2-in-1 PCs, which provide 8th generation Core processors and Full HD displays. Pricing starts at $749.99, or $799.99 for models that are Active Pen capable. And both will be available on October 3.

Visor

Dell’s Windows Mixed Reality headset is called the Visor, and it cuts an impressive figure in all-white. The name isn’t cute, either: It actually features a flip-up visor for transitioning between MR and the real world without having to take off the headset.

“The Dell Visor features inside-out tracking cameras, with a 360-degree panoramic view so the headset can scan surroundings instead of satellite emitters positioned inside the room,” Microsoft says. “Dell Visor Controllers offer complete flexibility with six degrees of freedom of movement in a three-dimensional space, and allow total control with haptic feedback, thumb stick and buttons fully tracked by sensors in the headset.”

The Dell Visor will be available sometime this holiday season and will cost $359.99, or $459.99 for a version that includes the controllers.
