Apple Fitness+ Launches Next Week

Posted December 8, 2020 | Apple | Apple Fitness+ | Apple Watch | iOS | iPadOS | Mobile | wearables | Windows

Apple originally announced that its Fitness+ subscription service would launch by the end of 2020, and today it revealed that it will make good on that promise.

“Being more active is one of the most important things we can do for our health, but we know choosing to work out can often be a challenge whether you’re very active or just getting started,” Apple’s Jay Blahnik announced. “We’re excited for Apple Fitness+ to bring together the metrics from Apple Watch, great music, and a diverse and inspiring trainer team—in a uniquely simple, easy-to-access way across Apple devices—to encourage our users to get fit and stay healthy.”

Apple Fitness+ will launch next Monday, December 14, and will cost $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year. It requires iOS 14.3 or higher on iPhone, watchOS 7.2 or higher on Apple Watch, iPadOS 14.3 or higher on iPad, and/or tvOS 14.3 or higher on Apple TV. It will appear as a new tab in the Fitness app on iPhone (for Apple Watch users), and a new Fitness app for iPad and Apple TV will be available by next week. (The Fitness app on Apple TV will appear automatically when you upgrade the OS.)

At launch, Fitness+ will provide 10 personalized, studio-style workouts—High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Strength, Yoga, Dance, Core, Cycling, Treadmill (for running and walking), Rowing, and Mindful Cooldown—led by professional trainers. It provides what Apple calls “an intelligent recommendation engine,” and recommends workouts that match what the user already enjoys doing. Apple promises new content every week, and there are Absolute Beginner courses for newbies.

Many Fitness+ workouts require no equipment at all, Apple says, but some do require dumbbells, and the Cycling, Treadmill, and Rowing workouts obviously require equipment as well. Most workouts are 10, 20, 30, or 45 minutes long.
