New MacBook Pro 'to get 1080p webcam'

Posted July 12, 2021 | Mac

According to the latest rumour, one of the big changes in this autumn’s MacBook Pro update will be the replacement – at last! – of the outdated 720p FaceTime HD webcam with a new 1080p model.

If the information – which comes from the Twitter leaker Dylandkt and is reported by AppleInsider – is correct, many users will be happy, especially considering that videoconferencing has received a huge boost as a result of the ongoing pandemic and the consequent increase in isolation and remote working. The webcam in the current MacBook Pro is notoriously underspecced; as Dylandkt observes, it’s weaker than the front-facing camera in the (cheaper) iPad Air.

The higher-quality 1080p webcam isn’t just coming to the MacBook Pro; Dylandkt says it will appear throughout the Mac range. Apple has already replaced the webcam in the iMac, and it’s probably only a matter of time before the 720p cameras are phased out completely.

What else can we expect from the new MacBook Pro? A more powerful Apple processor (of course), updated screens and more ports; you can read more about the update in our roundup of the latest new MacBook Pro rumours.
